About Thai Yoga Massage
Thai yoga massage is a combination of acupressure along the sen (energy lines) and assisted stretching movements to release muscle tension and improve range of motion. The stretches include being positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage, which is why it is often called Thai "Yoga" Massage because of the stretching aspect of the technique.
What is today called "Thai massage" or "Thai yoga massage" is an ancient healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles and assisted yoga postures.
The founder of Thai massage and medicine is said to have been Shivago Komarpaj (ชีวกโกมารภัจจ์ Jīvaka Komarabhācca), who was the Buddha's physician over 2,500 years ago, according to the Pāli Buddhist canon. He is noted in ancient documents for his extraordinary medical skills, his knowledge of herbal medicine, and for having treated important people of his day, including the Buddha himself.
Shivago's teachings were transmitted throughout Asia with the spread of Buddhism, and came to the Buddhist temple of Wat Po in Bangkok, which is the modern day home of Thai Traditional Medicine.
